| ASHFORD COMPANY COMPETES FOR TOP BUSINESS AWARD
An Ashford company is in the running for a prestigious UK business award after coming top in its region.
Sunray Engineering, based at Kingsnorth Industrial Estate, has been named the South East’s Business of the Year, sponsored by Westfield Health. It now goes through to compete for the national crown at this year’s British Chambers of Commerce Awards in London.
Established in 1985, Sunray Engineering manufactures speciality steel doors and louvre systems for the military, the government, as well as commercial, industrial and residential markets.
Doubling of staff
Thanks to its ability to identify key growth areas, the business has grown over the last two years, with the workforce doubling to 41 staff nearly all of whom are local to the area and sales growing steadily, securing a multi-million pound turnover. Several environmental accreditations are also among its long list of achievements.
Judges singled out the firm for having “a strong understanding of its market and good growth in sales due to effective targeted promotion”, with “quality product development, innovation and customer focus all serving to make Sunray a sound business proposition in a challenging sector”.
The very best of UK business
John Dunsmure, Managing Director of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “Despite the difficult economic climate, businesses across the country are continuing to succeed, overcoming obstacles by adopting innovative ideas and motivating their people. This company is a great example of the very best of UK business and I wish the team at Sunray Engineering success in the national finals.”
Clinching the national Business of the Year Award would also mean Sunray Engineering would be in with a chance to collect the ‘Winner of Winners’ £50,000 cash prize. This goes to the category winner that judges believe stands out from the rest.
There are eight categories, backed by high profile sponsors including Royal Bank of Scotland, AVG Technologies, Dell, Staples, BT, fdf (Foundation Degree Forward) and AXA PPP Healthcare.
The national winners will be announced at a ceremony at the National Maritime Museum in London on November 26.
