Bespoke louvre system for leading architectural firm

EDF substation
Sunray's StackableLouvre system was used on all four sides of the electricity sub-station at the Foster + Partners campus in Battersea.
Foster + Partners contacted Sunray to help develop a steel louvre system for its new substation. The objective was to create an aesthetically pleasing finish, which would blend in harmoniously with a neighbouring outbuilding that featured wooden doors.

EDF energy had specified their usual heavy duty doors, by Sunray Engineering Ltd. for the substation but because the building is highly visible from the architectural practice’s canteen area, Foster + Partners wanted to integrate the design into the wider practice campus of buildings in Battersea, London.

Sunray suggested a number of alternative solutions, which would meet the client’s design requirements and comply with EDF energy regulations. To overcome the challenge of limited space, Sunray was also able to replace the hinged door with a sliding door.

Only three steel louvre banks are required for the side of the substation to provide the necessary cross ventilation, yet for design continuity, Sunray manufactured and installed powder–coated, mild steel louvre banks on all four sides of the substation, and created bespoke mitre joint sections for each of the four corners. Sunray’s unique StackableLouvre system is versatile and can be built to any height. It has no visual joins and the sections can be cut to any size or shape.

The resulting innovative use of steel louvres ensures that the substation integrates seamlessly and remains in keeping with the other outbuilding.
