
Sunray Engineering has certified a fully louvred fire-rated doorset, a development that began with a request architects have been making for years: an opening that ventilates across its full face without giving up either the fire compartment or the security line. The doorset is certified for fire integrity up to 90 minutes, tested to BS EN 1634-1 and classified in accordance with EN 13501-2, and to Loss Prevention Standard LPS 1175 Issue 8 at Security Rating 2. This now provides a market leading solution for fire and ventilation without compromise.
The fully louvred leaf delivers between 35 and 45% airflow depending on specification. Ventilation of that order achieved through a certified fire door, rather than around it, changes the range of solutions available at design stage. An opening that would previously have been resolved with a louvred panel beside a separate rated door, or with mechanical ventilation behind a solid leaf, can now be drawn as one certified element.
Plant rooms, substations, switch rooms, transformer chambers and riser cupboards are the obvious applications, but they are a small sample rather than the limit. Any opening that has to move air and hold a fire compartment is a candidate, across data centres, healthcare, utilities, defence, and rail and transport infrastructure. The doorset is available in single, double and leaf-and-a-half configurations, suiting structural openings to a maximum of 2400mm wide by 2400mm high, depending on configuration and rating.
Because the doorset shares the louvre language of Sunray's wider range, a fire-rated opening no longer has to announce itself as a different element in the elevation. Rear concealed fixings keep the external face clean, and the doorset can sit within a continuous louvred facade so that rated and non-rated openings read as a single surface, finished across a standard range of 58 colours, marine grade as standard. For architects working on plant-heavy buildings, that removes a compromise between compliance and elevation that has long been taken as fixed.
Fire performance is third party certified up to E90, giving 90 minutes fire integrity, tested to BS EN 1634-1 and classified in accordance with EN 13501-2, with duration dependent on specification. Security certification is to Loss Prevention Standard LPS 1175 Issue 8 at Security Rating 2 (B3) under certificate number 234t Part 2, and Security Rating 2 Mk3 under certificate number 234u Part 2. The doorset is Secured by Design accredited.
Architects have been asking us for this for years, and until now the honest answer was that something had to give, whether that was the ventilation rate, the fire rating or the security rating. Certifying a fully louvred leaf for all three is a game changer for our industry, because it changes what can be drawn. I expect to see it specified in places we have not thought of yet.
